Dr George Coleman - Rheumatologist

#MidCentralStaffMonday

Meet Dr George Coleman, one of our newly recruited SMO (Senior Medical Officers) for Rheumatology at Te Pae Hauora o Ruahine o Tararua| MidCentral after deciding to begin his SMO career here based at Palmerston North Hospital.

“While preparing for my General Medicine exams, I needed to decide about what subspecialty to train in and I found Rheumatology to be very interesting. I applied for a training position in Christchurch and started training there.”

“The thing I love the most about Rheumatology is the improvements that we make in our patients’ lives. We see people unable to walk and sleep due to pain in multiple joints, start their treatment and then we see them get back to normal life and function. It’s very satisfying!”

Dr Coleman grew up in Auckland and completed his degree in medicine from there. He was working at the Palmerston North Hospital for several years prior and worked in several parts of New Zealand before moving back here in 2022.

“Palmy is home to me. My fiancée grew up here and we just love the warm and friendly vibe! I have worked at the hospital for many years. I know most of the staff and doctors and I have always enjoyed working here.”

George completely vouches for the wide scope in Rheumatology and thinks if people are interested, to explore it as a career option.

“We need many more Rheumatologists so you will never be short of work. It does take some time to train, so you should decide to begin your training after completing your post graduate studies in internal medicine. If you’re training in internal medicine and are interested in Rheumatology, you are welcome to connect with me. 😊”

Outside of work, he loves an active lifestyle. He can often be spotted enjoying his time outdoors - running, surfing, snowboarding and longboarding. He is also a big-time tennis and basketball enthusiast and loves playing a game or two when he has time.

We’re so happy to have you on the team, Dr Coleman!
