Palmerston North Regional Hospital is the premier healthcare institution in the MidCentral Region. With a dedicated Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit, and Regional Cancer Treatment Service, as well as one of the largest trauma centres nationwide, Palmerston North Hospital provides industry leading specialised care and emergency treatment to the MidCentral region.

Covering a geographic area of 8,912 km2, spanning across the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand, our hospital extends its services from the Manawatu, Horowhenua, and Otaki districts on the western coast to the Tararua district on the eastern coast. With a capacity of over 380 beds, we provide secondary care to an urban population of 81,000 and over 200,000 in the catchment area - increasing to 500,000 for the delivery of some tertiary services.

Palmerston North Regional Hospital is located to the north of Palmerston North City close to the local airport.

Our campus combines traditional buildings with a rich history alongside cutting-edge, state-of-the-art facilities. Recent enhancements include the addition of a new Medical Assessment & Planning Unit (MAPU) and Emergency Department Observation Area (EDOA). We are also excited to announce the ongoing construction of a new Mental Health inpatient ward, further elevating our services.

Palmerston North Regional Hospital turned 125 in 2018 and continues to evolve and add to current facilities. A proposed future acute services building is under initial planning and will require significant investment to complete. Kono Kai Cafe

Kono Kai Café is our exceptional on-site eatery. It’s situated on the first floor of the main hospital building and is dedicated to refuelling our staff during their shifts. After having been recently upgraded in 2022, the café is clean and vibrant and provides delicious food focused on flavour, value and wellbeing.

Kono Kai Café is a place to bond over good food, have good conversation and connect in with other staff, fostering a sense of togetherness in our hospital.
