Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand | Te Pae Hauora o Ruahine o Tararua | MidCentral recognises Te Tiriti o Waitangi as the founding document of Aotearoa New Zealand.

The treaty encapsulates the relationship between the Crown and Iwi. We ensure equity is achieved by following the framework for Māori development and wellbeing as set out by The New Zealand Public Health and Disabilities Act 2000.

Our staff are a multicultural diverse workforce where 1 in 5 originate from countries other than Aotearoa New Zealand.

Education & training opportunities

Te Whatu Ora - MidCentral provides staff many opportunities to further themselves with a number of ongoing education/training options regionally, nationally and internationally.

We’ve forged good working relationships with Massey University, UCOL Health & Wellbeing and Nursing, University of Otago, Pūhoro STEMM Academy, and Otago Polytechnic to offer students the opportunity to experience the health workforce and channel their careers into MidCentral. There are also courses available for existing staff to help develop personal and professional skills.

On-site at Palmerston North Hospital you will find our Education Centre, Clinical Library and the newly established Laurie McCool Centre. A number of in-house courses/sessions are provided and these are also complemented with a number of online training courses provided by platforms like Ko Awatea LEARN.

Best of both worlds

Te Whatu Ora - MidCentral is a medium-size health provider with big city opportunities and small-town perks. Here are some good-to-know facts about working here:

  • You can have it all in MidCentral – city living with nature, beaches, walks, and events right on your doorstep. We are also one of the most affordable regions to live in with lower house prices.

  • We have strong community connections, with a number of organisations offering support with donations to our wards and facilities.

  • We are one of the first districts to introduce automated CPR training for staff using cutting-edge technology with mannequins that give real time feedback. This means staff no longer have to sit through long first aid refresher courses, and can complete a 10-minute training every few months in their own time.

  • We became one of the first health regions to almost fully electrify our vehicle fleet, greatly reducing our carbon footprint.

  • We are one of the only hospitals in Aotearoa New Zealand with a dedicated garden space. The Garden of Tranquillity at Palmerston North Hospital is a calm spot for staff and patients to enjoy and is maintained by a team of volunteers.

  • We have a comprehensive Gateway Programme that channels keen secondary school and university students on a learning journey with the opportunity to work for MidCentral at the end of their study.

  • We were the first health district to introduce the Māori Scholarship Programme, designed to support Māori students with their tertiary education, reducing the financial barrier for them and increasing equity.

  • We are part of a number of national and international research projects. We have the opportunity to give input and influence health care as a part of the team of teams under Te Whatu Ora | Health New Zealand.

  • Our Midwives have access the purpose-built Te Papaioea Birthing Centre, a modern facility where hapū māmā (mothers) can have their pēpi (babies) and enjoy a post-natal stay.

Our benefits

Staff have access to many benefits and career enhancements. When needed, MidCentral also provides a free counselling service that includes trained counsellors available via text or call.

  • At Palmerston North Hospital we have a staff cafeteria that caters to a wide variety of dietary requirements, including gluten free and vegan options.

  • Our education centre is the hub for professional development. It has a range of clinical and non-clinical courses, hosts open days for budding health professionals and celebratory events for our kaimahi (staff).

  • We offer free meditation sessions in our hospital chapel every week.

  • We offer discounts from around 60 participating local businesses in the MidCentral region including Noel Leeming (electronics and homeware), Accuro Health Insurance, Snap Fitness, and many more!

  • We recognise and celebrate our staff’s hard work, achievements, and dedication through a number of award programmes each year.

  • We have a range of tools available for free that staff and whānau (families) can access should they feel they need a little extra support or someone to talk to.
