Immigration

To work at MidCentral District Health Board (MDHB) you must have evidence of an immigration status that will allow you to work in New Zealand.

  • If you are not a New Zealand or Australian citizen or permanent resident you will need a work permit to be eligible to work in New Zealand. A work permit allows you to live and work in New Zealand for a restricted length of time.

  • In most cases you will need to obtain New Zealand Registration before applying for a work permit/visa. Our Registration Boards section below lists all of the professional registration boards in New Zealand.

  • To obtain a work permit/visa forms or to find more information about New Zealand Immigration processes please visit Immigration New Zealand.

Key organisations & registration

Professional Registration

In New Zealand all health professionals are required under the Health Practitioners Competence Act (HPCA) to be registered with their professional board before they can begin to work. This ensures professional competence and protects the health and safety of our people by ensuring all practitioners are fit to practice.

This registration can take up to four weeks to process so it’s best to get it started as soon as you can.

If you also need to apply for a visa, you can only do so once your registration is confirmed. Check out the relevant board related to your field for further information and their registration process.

University Affiliation

Palmerston North Hospital is a teaching hospital with affiliation to the University of Otago, Wellington.

Around 12-16 final year medical students each year complete core runs at Palmerston North Hospital and surrounding GP practices. There are also plenty of elective opportunities for students in and around the hospital.

If you are interested in learning more about our programme or would like to request an elective application form please contact Sonya Clifford, trainee intern coordinator, telephone +64 6 350 8329.

Thank you for your interest in our programme and we hope to hear from you!

Palmerston North Option

We accept 12- 16 final year medical students each year to complete their core runs at Palmerston North Hospital and surrounding GP practices.

We also have a tailored teaching programme for our students and to the very motivated students we offer the opportunity to participate in an independent project, such as a clinical audit or writing up a case report, under supervision of the Associate Dean or one of the other senior medical officers.

If you are a New Zealand student and are interested in spending your final year in Palmerston North please contact the Associate Dean of Student Affairs (5th year) at the University of Otago, Wellington for application materials.

If you are interested in learning more about our programme please contact Christine Dalley, trainee intern coordinator, telephone +64 6 350 8329.

  • if you come to us you will be able to spend the entire year in one place rather than having to move from place to place depending on your run placements.

  • Our hospital, while offering an extensive array of services, retains the character of a provincial hospital with a more relaxed and friendly atmosphere than most major academic centres around the country.

  • Due to our relatively small number of students, consultants and RMOs are delighted to work with students and eager to teach without any signs of the so-called “student fatigue” often encountered in larger teaching hospitals.
