We support your medical career at all levels, including House Officer, Senior House Officer and Registrar, both in training and non-training situations.

Palmerston North Hospital is a medium sized secondary hospital with over 350 beds, supporting an urban population of 85,000 and a total population catchment of over 190,000. We also provide tertiary oncology services for a population of more than 500,000 across the lower North Island.

Work Environment

We have around 170 Senior Medical Officers supported by 110 Registrars and 81 House Officers and Senior House Officers. There is a collegial work environment, with RMOs experiencing good working relationships between nursing and allied health staff, as well as medical colleagues.

Palmerston North Hospital is a teaching hospital associated with Otago School of Medicine, Wellington. The hospital is accredited as a registrar training centre by many of the medical colleges and has a high record of success with registrars passing their college examinations and other assessment processes.

Most areas have House Officers and Registrars, including training and non-training positions. There are numerous learning opportunities in all areas of medicine. Senior Medical Officers (SMOs) are actively engaged in teaching RMOs at every level, supported by a comprehensive weekly teaching programme. RMO wellbeing is supported through various initiatives.

Additionally, there is an excellent Clinical Library with access to a range of resources, including online journals.

Mentoring, Leadership & Support

Our Chief Medical Officer, supported by Clinical Executives and Medical Leads, provides leadership and support to medical colleagues and management, particularly in the areas of medical education and clinical governance.

The Medical Administration Unit (MAU) understand the significance of your RMO years and aims to provide individual support and advice to help advance your careers. There are approximately 120 SMOs employed by Te Whatu Ora Health NZ - MidCentral across many specialities. The Chief Medical officer provides strong leadership and support to medical colleagues and management, particularly in the area of clinical governance.
