Grace Laws - Diabetes Specialist Dietitian

#MidCentralStaffMonday

Grace Laws is a Diabetes Specialist Dietitian here at Te Whatu Ora MidCentral. Her role involves supporting patients in managing their diabetes and any other medical conditions through medical nutrition therapy.

“I began studying nutrition purely out of an interest in helping people in our community. After gaining some knowledge in the field, I chose dietetics as this area gave me an opportunity to work in a clinical setting and support my patients by improving their health. I majorly work with adults, young adults and pregnant women and ensure that I always set attainable nutrition interventions for my patients to achieve the best possible outcomes.”

Grace started working with us as a dietitian assistant in February this year before moving up to her current role after securing her Annual Practising Certificate (APC) in April. She believes that training in dietetics has enabled her to develop great soft skills — something that is important in day-to-day life.

“Working as a Diabetes Dietitian gives me the opportunity to work with people of all age groups which is so unique for a new graduate. Specifically, it is quite unique and interesting for a dietitian to work with pregnant people. There are a lot of minute details we look at and thankfully I have my wonderful seniors and team members to guide me at each step if I need them!”

Grace has a strong passion for supporting her community, through helping her patients adopt healthier lifestyles. Her dedication did not go unnoticed, and she received a nomination for the Ngā Tohu Whakamānawa Pou Toiora, Allied Health Awards recently held at MidCentral.

Outside of work, you’ll catch Grace playing with her much loved dogs, spending quality time with her friends, and hitting the trails for a bit of mountain biking. She also has a green thumb and loves to tend to her veggie garden.

Thank you for all your mahi Grace!
